Day 4: Thursday 25th April
2007
Again another really busy day. I was up against it trying to get this
chapter Polished off, as well as get some stuff prepared for the Artist
led archive.
I need a night out to let off some steam. After I cleared up my paper work
I had to start rushing for the cook off. I already knew what I was going
to make. I had decided pretty quickly after the whole thing was mentioned.
It was a bit like dealing with an artwork, you have the idea and leave
it to slowly refine in your mind over the course of the day while your
doing other things. So come lunchtime I put some suitable food related
music on my ipod and headed for Sainsbury’s. My plan was simple.
Make something fun and interesting that would spark Luke’s imagination.
Also, make sure I give him something I know he’ll really like but
he’s never tried before.
So on the first round of things Paul went first, Meabh went second and
I went last. Paul Made Pizza surprise. Meabh Made Cauliflower Love and
Tomato Poppers and I made Carrot Jenga with ‘eye of the tiger soundtrack’ and
Camembert Fondue. I thought I was onto a winner, but I lost out on the
fact it didn’t float (see one of Luke’s score cards). Next
up Paul served homemade Pumpkin Pie. Now I know why American's rattle on
about pumpkin pie all the time. It rocked! Meabh made Hippy Crispy Nonsense
with Pineapple Fluff! It was brilliant looking and really creative. I made
Sweetie Sushi on a bed of sweetie seaweed and sea urchins. I took a bit
of a gamble with this. Luke isn’t really big into sweeties, but I
knew he’d like the theme and the colours.
Last up were the drinks round. Paul made Honey and fresh mint iced tea.
Meabh made Non-alcoholic bloody Mary, and I gave Luke a glass of ginger
beer, which might seem like a bit of a cop out but I knew he’d love
it and he’d never drank it before. Thank you those nice people at
the ginger beer factory for winning me the competition. In all fairness
though, Meabh and Paul had worked so hard on their dishes and I’d
won by knowing Luke really well and a bit of luck, rather than anything
else. I felt quite bad because Meabh and Paul had made so much effort,
and in the adult world they both would have kicked my arse if it were a
dinner party. But winning is not the point, we had a fantastic evening
playing the 'Cook off' game.
